Pass The Baton Kyoto Gion

In this project, hammer-split bamboo (hishigi) was used along the narrow approach to create a calming space that gently guides visitors toward the store. Hishigi processing is a traditional technique in which round bamboo is hammered along the grain with a specialized tool to produce flat, board-like strips. The irregular splits created during the process give the bamboo a unique texture, adding warmth and depth to the space. Hishigi bamboo has long been used as wall decoration in Kyoto machiya houses, offering a rustic yet refined aesthetic.
