MICHIKU

Exploring the Unknown Potential of Bamboo

MICHIKU is an experimental initiative by Takesada Shoten, dedicated to exploring new possibilities for bamboo. Rooted in generations of craftsmanship - from cultivation and harvesting to processing - it brings together the deep knowledge of bamboo artisans with the creative visions of architects, designers, and artists. Through bold design experiments such as installations and interior applications, the project seeks to reinterpret bamboo’s flexibility, strength, and natural beauty in contemporary spaces, transcending conventional boundaries.

Through our “Bamboo Community Initiative,” we also focus on restoring neglected bamboo groves and nurturing the next generation of bamboo harvesters. In partnership with Kyoto Prefecture, Nantan City, and the Kyoto Chamber of Commerce and Industry, we are working toward a stable supply of bamboo and the realization of a sustainable, circular local economy.

Balancing tradition and innovation, MICHIKU is a forward-looking endeavor to carry bamboo into the future.
