For this store design project in central Tokyo, white bamboo flat-splits were used as interior screens.
Normally, when flat-split bamboo is applied in a louver-style configuration, support bars need to be placed at approximately 400 mm intervals to control bamboo’s natural flexibility and tendency to warp. In this project, however, the design intent was to minimize the number of support bars as much as possible. To meet this request, a layered construction method was employed, effectively suppressing distortion while maintaining structural integrity.
At night, warm-toned lighting highlights the natural texture of the bamboo, creating a calm and inviting atmosphere.
This project showcases how bamboo, as a natural material, can be harnessed to bring out its unique beauty while achieving a modern and sophisticated store design.
