For this project in Kyoto, flat-split bamboo (masawari) was used in joinery and partitions. Masawari is produced by shaving the sides of the bamboo to reveal the hollow core, showcasing the organic nodes and creating a light, airy impression. Because the hollow core remains open, these screens can divide a space without completely blocking it. When illuminated by sunlight or interior lighting, the bamboo casts beautiful, dynamic shadows throughout the space.

Location: Kyoto
Material: White bamboo
Technique: Masawari processing
