Both Mosodake and Madake are essential species in the Japanese bamboo industry, widely used as primary materials for both interior and exterior bamboo products. They can be easily distinguished by their nodes: Mosodake has a single ring, while Madake features two rings spaced few millimeters apart.

Madake (Phyllostachys bambusoides), often regarded as the quintessential Japanese bamboo, is highly valued for its versatility. While it can be used in various applications, it is particularly prized in weaving and basketry for its unique flexibility and bending properties which comes from its fine grain.
